Bicycles have always been a part of the transportation equation in Trinidad and Tobago. Over the last 60+ years it has been eclipsed by the shiny new, ego feeding automobile. We've seen the bicycle commuter retreat into the shadows of transportation, the lavish attention paid to roads for cars. It has messed with our minds (and our wallets) such that we're somehow considered inferior for wanting to use a bicycle for transportation. Yet, in a tiny place, it just makes practical sense. For the price of one car battery, you can buy a bicycle. The real barrier is safety. Speeding drivers now dominate the transportation landscape, with deadly metal projectiles making up their outer skins! They're invincible! Those who have little choice (poor people) must now risk their lives for using this readily accessible mode of transport. Many progressive places have recognized the need for safe infrastructure and have installed protected bike lanes for commuters who choose to get places using a bicycle rather than a motor vehicle. Some places choose to do nothing to make alternative transportation modes viable. Commuters will remain locked into car dependency if there's no properly functioning public transit or safe active travel options. Car dependency is made mandatory! It will take political will to emancipate the traveling public from the trap of forced car ownership! #MobilityIsEquity #PoliticalWill #EndCarDependency #ActiveLifestyles
